Specimen Type/Requirements

Self-Collect Vaginal Specimen Options:
1. Rovers Evalyn Brush: Recommended for patient self-collection
2. Copan FLOQSwab: Acceptable for patient self-collection

 

Note - there are different recommendations for swab vs. brush

Swab:

In the 3 days prior to self-collection of a vaginal sample, use of vaginal ovules, creams or washes, vaginal contraceptives or condoms should be avoided.

In the 2 days prior to self-collection of a vaginal sample, sexual intercourse and ultrasound scans or gynecological examinations should be abstained from.

 

Brush:

Inform your healthcare provider if you have used any substances such as vaginal creams, gels, lubricants, etc. within 24 hours prior to collection.

 

After patient self-collection, clinical staff will suspend the specimen in a standard ThinPrep vial prior to submission to the laboratory.

Self-collection is only available in a clinical setting (not home collection).

 

This source has been FDA approved. This test is for patients who have NOT had a hysterectomy.

 

NOTE: Specimens that are macroscopically bloody and/or dark brown will be rejected. Recommended to not collect sample during menses.

*Some items, including feminine hygiene products, may interfere with test performance and should be avoided prior to self-collection.  Review collection instructions for detailed information.

Additional Information

Self-collected vaginal HPV positive specimens will not reflex to PAP smear since samples do not contain representative cervical/endocervical cells. 

HPV Types Detected:
• HPV16
• HPV18
• Other HPV high risk: 12 other HPV types detected but not differentiated include 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, 66, 68

 

Self-Collect Limitations:
• Patient self-collection is not recommended during pregnancy or in the 3 months after giving birth, in case of recent gynecological surgery, or unusual bleeding or pelvic pain.
