Specimen Type/Requirements

Stool Collection Guide

Collect specimen in a clear or sterile container with a tight fitting cover. Transfer stool to Cary-Blair (or ParaPak Enteric-Plus) medium. Rectal swabs, specimens contaminated with urine and diapers are unacceptable. Specimens collected following barium and/or Bismuth radiological examination are unacceptable for 7-10 days. It is recommended that stool specimens from both adults and children in the hospital for >3 days not be tested unless there are delineated plausible or epidemiological reasons to do so.
