Test ID BLOD0945 Transfusion Reaction

Important Note

Call Transfusion Services at 701-417-2745 (SMCF I-94) or 701-234-2105 (Broadway/South University) BEFORE test is ordered.  ABO/Rh and Direct Coombs test is performed on pre-transfusion, post-transfusion and unit specimens.  Depending on test results, additional testing may be performed and additional units of blood cannot be issued for infusion until workup is completed and pathologist has OK'd.

Return blood bag and tags to Transfusion Services by walking bag and tags to blood bank.  Remove the needle from infusion set and blood unit.  DO NOT USE pneumatic tube system.

Purple (EDTA) Tube or Pink (EDTA) Tube and 1 gold (SST) Tube

Specimen will be rejected if overt hemolysis

Collect first voided urine specimen post transfusion reaction

3.0 mL EDTA whole blood + 8-10 mL gold whole blood

+ 8-12 mL urine

Minimum Volume

3.0 mL EDTA whole blood (1.0 mL Pediatric <1 years old)

+3.0 mL gold whole blood + 3.0 mL urine
