Specimen Type/Requirements

Patient must be fasting.

GESTATIONAL GLUCOSE TOLERANCE:
(1) Draw one Green (Lithium Heparin) Tube or Gold (SST Serum) Tube
(2) Give the patient 100 grams of glucose unless the order specifies to base the glucose load on weight. The drink must be consumed within 5 minutes.
(3) Draw one Green (Lithium Heparin) Tube or Gold (SST Serum) Tube at 1, 2 and 3 hours after the dose is given. Label each specimen with the time and number of specimen in addition to normal label requirements.

ADULT Non Pregnant Tolerance:
(1) Draw one Green (Lithium Heparin) Tube or Gold (SST Serum) Tube
(2) Give the patient 75 grams of glucose. This is a standard dose for all adults except obstetric patients. The drink must be consumed within 5 minutes.
(3) Draw one Green (Lithium Heparin) Tube or Gold (SST Serum) Tube at 2 hours after the dose is given. Label each specimen with the time drawn in addition to normal label requirements.

CHILDREN AND INFANTS:
(1) Draw one Green (Lithium Heparin) Tube or Gold (SST Serum) Tube
(2) Give the patient 0.8 gm/lb body weight to a maxium of 75 grams of glucose. Once a child has reached 95 pounds, the normal adult dosage is given & the adult procedure is to be followed. 
(3) Draw one Green (Lithium Heparin) Tube or Gold (SST Serum) Tube every hour until the test is completed. Label each specimen with the time and number of specimen in addition to normal label requirements.

Centrifuge and separate plasma from cells as soon as possible but no longer than 2 hours after collection.
