Specimen Type/Requirements

Collection Instrustions:

 

Superficial wound - Remove surface exudate by wiping with sterile saline or 70% alcohol. Aspirate if possible or pass swab deep into lesion and firmly sample lesion's advancing edge. Tissue biopsy sample or needle aspirate is specimen of choice. 

 

Deep Wound- Aspirate absess wall material with needle and syringe. Aseptically tranfer all materials into sterile container. 

 

Tissue- Submit portion of tissue from area of concern in a sterile container. For small samples, add serveral drops of sterile saline to keep moist. 

 

Vaginal- Wipe away excessive amount of secretion or discharge. Obtain secretions from mucosal membrane of vaginal vault using sterile eswab. 

 

Follow departmental procedures for other sources.
