Specimen Type/Requirements
Pink (EDTA) Tube or Purple (EDTA) Tube
Specimen will be rejected if overt hemolysis
ANY OF THE FOLLOWING SPECIMEN COMBINATIONS MAY BE USED:
- FIRST CHOICE: Peripheral baby specimen and cord blood (sent in or collected on site). Tests included: ABO/Rh and Direct Coombs on cord blood; ABO/Rh, Antibody Screen on baby's peripheral specimen.
- SECOND CHOICE: Mother's specimen (sent in or collected on site) and cord blood (sent in or collected on site)/peripheral hematology specimen on baby. Tests included: ABO/Rh, Antibody Screen on mother's specimen; ABO/Rh, Direct Coombs on cord blood and ABO/Rh on peripheral specimen.
- THIRD CHOICE: Mother's specimen (sent in
or collected on site) and peripheral hematology specimen on
baby. Tests included: ABO/Rh, Antibody Screen on
mother's specimen; ABO/Rh, Direct Coombs on baby's peripheral
hematology specimen.
- BABY PERIPHERAL: Draw one lavender-top tube (EDTA) or pink-top tube (EDTA); minimum 3mL
- BABY PERIPHERAL-HEMATOLOGY: Specimen from CBC can be used to confirm baby's ABO/Rh and/or Direct Coombs
- MOTHER'S: Draw one pink-top tube (EDTA), minimum 3mL pink tube or one full lavender-top tube
- CORD BLOOD: Sent in or obtained in Family Birth Center. Specimen collected in cord blood tube or red top tube (plain). For accurate results, cord blood specimen must be less than 72 hours old.
