Specimen Type/Requirements
Light Green top (Lithium Heparin w/gel) tube - Plasma (preferred)
Gold top (Serum w/gel) tube - Serum
Red top (Serum w/out gel) tube - Serum
Overnight fasting is required.
Give 100 gram oral glucose load after drawing fasting specimen.
Properly label specimens with date and time.
Specimen should be centrifuged and separated within 2 hours of collection.
Panel includes a fasting glucose and a 1 Hour, 2 Hour and 3 Hour post glucose dose.
Test may be affected by gross hemolysis, gross icterus and gross lipemia.
Bismarck
Overnight fasting is required.
1) Draw one Green (Lithium Heparin) Tube or Gold (SST Serum) Tube.
(2) Give the patient 100 grams of glucose unless the order specifies to base the glucose load on weight. The drink must be consumed within 5 minutes.
(3) Draw one Green (Lithium Heparin) Tube or Gold (SST Serum) Tube at 1, 2 and 3 hours after the dose is given. Label each specimen with the time and number of specimen in addition to normal label requirements.
